Handmade woven art:
a new use for disappearing traditional
Sediq craft.
The Sediq like the Tayal are renowned among the indigenous people of Taiwan for their weaving. The women rely on their skill to set conditions for their marriage as they go along the mythical rainbow in a coming-of-age ceremony. Skilful hands not only merit a good wedding, they also earn social status. In traditional culture weaving was the only way women could enter into the sacred rites of tattooing and so attain a place among their ancestors. It is of great symbolic significance in their beliefs.
The Alan Tea Pack draws together oolong tea and weaving. The bag represents six hours of work by a woman from the village. The black, white and red pattern preserves the unique design of the tattoo. Keep it as a unique memento of Sediq culture.
Tradition is fast disappearing. The young women of the tribe need your encouragement to help them revive it. The old looms await the sound of busy fingers…
